Artist Statement

For 25 years, rustic furniture maker, Paul Dumond has been designing and building objects of beauty that grace the homes and offices of people who prize such excellence. Artistry that incorporates both rustic, traditional, contemporary and modern design elements. Paul specializes in unusual, hand picked, natural edged slab wood designs using stunning figured woods. He works with the client to build a piece of custom rustic furniture that fits their functions, style, and taste. Each piece of custom furniture is as individual as they are. Every piece of custom furniture is built by hand with hand selected wood from various parts of the country from Alaska to Maine. Paul travels extensively in search of the holy grail of hardwoods, the most spectacular woods that mother nature has to offer. In harmony with nature, Paul creates objects of lasting beauty that feeds your spirit and moves your soul. Pride in craftsmanship distinguish a Dumond’s work of art. The finishing touch of each piece is a signature and date by the craftsman himself. References are available upon request.

How It All Began

Since 1980, Paul Dumond, has been dreaming and scheming new and different pieces of custom furniture that he would build on his free weekends while working a full-time job as an accountant. In 1991, after much learning and trial and error, he became a full-time “professional” woodworker. Paul began to do shows and accept commissions for custom pieces of furniture for clients across the country. In such far away places as St. Louis, Sun Valley, Coral Gables and New York City to mention a few.

His current work features unique woods and designs along with more traditional styles such as shaker and Stickley. A piece he’s currently working on features a 2′ by 6′ cherry slab hand selected at a mill in Pennsylvania. It forms the center piece of an executive rustic desk. Its edges are “live” which means they are not straight but are the actual outside edges of the tree with nothing removed. A crack in one end has butterflies which stabilize it but still show off its unique beauty. Paul’s goal is to build pieces of “art” yet still produce more traditional and affordable pieces that can find they’re way into people’s homes from coast to coast.
