Introducing Walnut Slab Live Edge Coffee Tables: Crafting Sustainable, Unique, and Beautiful Furniture

At Dumonds Custom Furniture, we specialize in creating custom-built coffee tables using exquisite materials such as walnut, cherry, maple, and other distinct urban and recycled woods. Our commitment to eco-conscious practices sets us apart, as our off-grid shop operates solely on solar power, ensuring a minimal carbon footprint. We prioritize the use of recycled and reclaimed wood whenever possible, striving to make our products as environmentally sound as can be.

To source the most exceptional woods that possess a one-of-a-kind allure, we collaborate with small sawmills across the country. Our preferred sources often involve urban trees that have been damaged in storms or need to be removed for construction purposes. This responsible form of harvesting aligns with our values. On one occasion, I embarked on a journey spanning over 2000 miles from Montana to Maryland with my truck and trailer to collaborate with a small tree service company. They were converting urban trees into firewood and had recently acquired a small sawmill. By transforming these trees into wood slabs for our furniture, we granted them a new life—a splendid piece of functional heirloom furniture instead of ending up in a wood stove.

Upon receiving the raw material, we meticulously stack and air dry the wood, allowing it to reach the ideal moisture content. This careful process takes approximately one year per inch of thickness. Only when the wood has attained the proper dryness level can we begin working with it, ensuring minimal warping, cracking, or bowing. At this stage, we proceed to plane, sand, and finish the slabs, preparing them for the final stages of furniture construction.

Many of our coffee tables feature unique shapes that showcase what George Nakashima, in his book “The Soul of the Tree,” refers to as the “Soul of the tree.” This concept of “live edge” originated in the 1960s with George Nakashima, and it captivated me due to the captivating forms found in individual pieces of wood. I believed this style would allow for greater creativity in my craftsmanship.

With a collection of wood slabs amassed over 30 years, I meticulously review hundreds of pieces to curate a series of over 30 distinct coffee tables. Each table possesses its own story, species, and captivating shape. The wood species I utilize come from various states, including Pennsylvania, Utah, California, Maryland, Oregon, and others. Small sawmill owners reach out to me, offering limited supply selections of hardwood slabs. Depending on our customers’ preferences, we procure materials from across the country, ensuring a diverse range of options.

Often, the inherent characteristics of a wood slab, including its grain, color, and species, dictate the type of furniture it will become. It determines whether it will embody the form of a coffee table, bench, desk, table, or conference table. Embracing the most spectacular woods that mother nature has to offer, we harmoniously create objects of enduring beauty that not only nourish the soul but also become cherished heirlooms passed down through generations.

Dumonds Custom Furniture caters to various lifestyle preferences, seamlessly blending with contemporary, modern, or rustic living. Whether you reside in a cabin, apartment, condominium, or house, our coffee tables elevate the design aesthetic of your chosen space.
